Vaalbos Wines is the story of faith, resilience, and a dream that took root in Limpopo’s Loskop Valley. It began in 2020, a year of global uncertainty, but for Hennie and Gertjie de Beer it was a year of clarity. The fertile lands that had long produced citrus, grapes, and tobacco whispered of new potential, wine. With determination and the right people beside them, the vision began to unfold.
In 2021, viticulturist Bianca Kooij planted the first vines, marking not just a season but a promise: that Limpopo could produce wines worthy of recognition. Each decision was deliberate, from the cultivars chosen to the sustainable practices embraced. Slowly, the vines stretched into the soil, absorbing the unique terroir of the valley.
By 2024, the first harvest arrived, a moment of awe and gratitude. Sun-kissed grapes were hand-harvested, proof that the dream had become real. Ten hectares now lie under the Limpopo sun, planted to Grenache Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Protective nets shield the vines, and harvests in January and February ensure only the best fruit reaches the cellar.
That same year, construction of a new wine cellar was completed, with capacity for 85,000 liters annually. Built to balance artisanal small batches with larger production, it combines tradition and modern technology. More than a production space, it is a place of creation and celebration, where Limpopo’s soil and spirit are transformed into wine.
For Winemaker Monique Fourie, winemaking is both control and surrender. A perfectionist at heart, she embraces minimal intervention, yet in the bushveld, far from suppliers and labs, she often finds herself “winging it” with best intentions and available knowledge. It is this blend of precision and improvisation that gives Vaalbos its character.
