Cans, Kegs & Bagnums: The New Shape of Small-Batch Wine

Cans, stainless kegs and cheeky “bagnums” (bag-in-box sized for the fridge door) aren’t just quirky, they’re a practical way to shrink cost, waste and carbon while keeping wine fresh and accessible.

First, the carbon math. A comparative life-cycle assessment across the US, Europe, India and Brazil found that “aluminium and PET containers have far lower carbon footprints than single-use glass” (keeping the caveat single use in mind, remember people recycle where you can) for drinks packaging, glass consistently comes out worst across regions. In Europe specifically, the lowest-impact aluminium can comes in more than 70% lower than the best-performing glass bottle; in several comparisons a glass bottle’s footprint is six to ten times higher than the lowest PET or can formats. For small producers fighting for margins, that’s not a rounding error, it’s strategy.

South Africa’s recycling picture backs the shift. According to a Cape Wine recycling summary, we recycle over 70% of used steel beverage cans, versus 42% for glass and 30% for plastic packaging—so moving wine into highly recovered metals makes circularity easier to achieve.

Reality check: younger households recycle far less than older ones, so systems that make doing the right thing effortless, think can returns or refill taps, matter. Take for example central Europe that has a long tradition of bring your own bottle when purchasing wine.

Quality isn’t the sacrifice people assume. Lightweight cans slash breakage and transport emissions, and they protect wine from lightstrike and oxygen; even my most bottle-loyal friends stop arguing once they taste a crisp can-fresh white on a hot day. Bagnums (1.5 L) do a similar job at home: lighter to ship, chill fast, and because the pouch collapses as you pour, keep oxygen off the wine so a weekday glass actually tastes like the weekend one.

This isn’t only planet logic; it’s the triple bottom line. Profit: less packaging, less breakage, fewer returns, lower freight, more margin. People: safer handling for staff, better pricing for drinkers, easier recycling for communities with patchy glass collection. Planet: lighter formats with proven, lower life-cycle impacts than single-use glass. “By far, single-use glass has the highest carbon footprint across all regions,” one summary reminds us, so let’s stop pretending it’s the default for every wine, every time.

Are there trade-offs? Of course. Not every style wants a can, and special bottles still make sense for cellaring and ceremony. But for fresh, vibrant, ready-to-drink wines, the kind most of us make and drink every week, the new shapes are simply smarter.

My take? Let grand reds keep their corks and heavy glass if they must. For the rest, let’s lean into formats that travel lighter, pour cleaner, and tread softer. Cans for the beach and the braai. Kegs for bars and festivals. Bagnums for the couch and the Tuesday roast chicken. Better wine, smaller footprint, happier margins, that’s a revolution worth drinking to.
